Human vascular endothelial cell growth factor (VEGF) is a highly specific mitogen for vascular endothelial cells.
The VEGF family currently comprises seven members: VEGF-A, VEGF-B, VEGF-C, VEGF-D, VEGF-E, VEGF-F, and PlGF.
Activities of VEGF
(1) Mitogenesis, angiogenesis, and endothelial survival
(2) Effects of VEGF on bone marrow cells and hematopoiesis
(3) Enhancement of vascular permeability and hemodynamic effects
Role of VEGF in Pathological Conditions
(1) Solid tumors
(2) Hematological malignancies
(3) Intraocular neovascular syndromes
(4) Inflammatory disorders and brain edema
(5) Pathology of the female reproductive tract
The VEGF exerts angiogenic, mitogenic and vascular permeability-enhancing activities specific for endothelial cells.
The VEGF has also been shown to be chemotactic for monocytes and osteoblasts.
